Dr Andrew Filmer

Researcher

Andrew began his research career as a first prize winner of the David Dalton Viola Research Competition, and earned his PhD from the University of Otago in New Zealand for research into alternative tunings of the viola, ranging from Baroque to contemporary composition. His editions of Bach, Mozart and Telemann have been published by the American Viola Society and the International Viola Society, as well as Comus Edition in the UK.

This research led him to presentations for International Viola Congresses in Germany, Poland and New Zealand, and peer-reviewed articles in the US, UK, New Zealand and Australia. He is a former Editor of the Journal of the American Viola Society.

Andrew’s interest in music editing produced research on editorial practices and biases, published in European Drama and Performance Studies in France, and his research in the collaboration of performers and researchers was published by the Centre for Intercultural Musicology at Churchill College, University of Cambridge.

With diversity as a hallmark, Andrew has co-authored research on the evolution of meaning in leitmotifs of John Williams’ music for Star Wars films. He is currently exploring cross-disciplinary collaboration of a musician, a painter, and a videographer. He was also part of a three-person team that constructed the first harpsichord built in Malaysia.
